Chapter Seventeen

Alex brushed his arm against mine and connected, If you don’t want to hear what she has to say, we can tell her you’re not up for it.

That suggestion was so damn tempting, but we needed answers. Unfortunately, I was learning that ignorance put me at the mercy of others. I needed to find a way to grab Matthew by the balls and twist, and if that was figuring out why I was different, then so be it. No. We need to hear her out.

I had no clue what she would say, but one thing was sure—I wasn’t reacting like a typical vampire, and I had a feeling the shadow was the reason.

“Okay, let’s hear it.” The sooner she got it out, the quicker I could handle the fallout.

Rosemary’s mouth tightened. “Once we’re inside.”

No one moved, waiting for my reaction.

Not wanting to be under the microscope, I marched toward Sterlyn and Griffin’s front door with Alex following me like a guard.

With all the turmoil churning inside me, I didn’t doubt he could feel my hesitation, fear, and unease—everything the shadow had made me feel while growing up with no one to turn to.

The others followed silently as we entered Griffin and Sterlyn’s house.

The familiar blue-gray walls were a sight for sore eyes. This place had come to feel like home. I strolled into the living room with its pearl-gray couch, which complemented the color scheme, sitting against the room’s longest wall, and a flat-screen television mounted on the opposite wall. I sat on the matching loveseat perpendicular to the couch and across from the windows, which were accented with white blinds.

Whatever Rosemary was about to say, I needed to be sitting down to hear it. As expected, Alex sat next to me and took my hand as Griffin, Sterlyn, and Sierra sat on the couch next to us. Killian paused next to the television, deep in thought.

Sierra sat on the end closest to me and grabbed my left hand, inspecting the ring again. She exhaled. “That’s so pretty. I need to hear every single detail of how he proposed.” She glanced at Sterlyn beside her, and her smile fell. “Wait! Were you there when it happened?” She gestured accusingly at Alex. “How dare you exclude the friends who aren’t allowed in Shadow City from the occasion!”

Okay, this wasn’t where I’d expected the conversation to go, but Sierra seemed genuinely upset. “No. He didn’t ask me in front of anyone. We were alone in our room.”

Rosemary marched into the center of the room and scowled at us. “Before we go further into this topic, can we please discuss Ronnie’s heritage?”

“I agree.” Killian strolled to the windows that overlooked the backyard. “Here, lately, shit has been happening at random. We need to talk before anyone else makes an appearance.”

He was so right about that. Between the Shadow City police showing up at the condominium and all the attacks, we were always rushing from one disaster to the next. Talking about our engagement was a whole lot more fun, except when I realized I couldn’t inform Annie and Eliza.
